Abu Sawatyr, El Quseir

The Dive Experience

Abu Sawatyr is renowned for its stunning underwater architecture, including towering coral pinnacles, steep drop-offs, and pristine reef plateaus. The site is typically dived as a drift dive, taking advantage of gentle to moderate currents that bring in nutrient-rich waters, attracting large pelagics and swarms of reef fish.

Divers can expect to glide alongside schools of fusiliers, snappers, and barracuda, with frequent encounters with Napoleon wrasse, trevallies, and the occasional grey reef shark or whitetip reef shark patrolling the blue.

The shallower zones are ideal for appreciating the intricate coral gardens, teeming with macro life such as nudibranchs, cleaner shrimp, and pipefish, making it a perfect blend of wide-angle and macro photography opportunities.

Marine Biodiversity & Coral Health

What truly sets Abu Sawatyr apart is its exceptional coral health. Unlike more trafficked dive sites, Abu Sawatyr’s reefs remain vibrant and unspoiled, showcasing flourishing hard corals like Acropora, Porites, and brain corals, as well as soft coral blooms that sway gracefully with the current.

This biodiversity hotspot offers a habitat for countless marine species, making every dive unique. Whether you’re searching for moray eels hiding within crevices, or mesmerized by the dance of anthias above coral heads, Abu Sawatyr will captivate your senses.

Ideal Conditions & Best Time to Dive

Abu Sawatyr enjoys excellent visibility year-round, often exceeding 25 meters. The optimal season runs from April to November, when water temperatures range between 26°C and 30°C and marine life activity is at its peak.

Due to occasional strong currents and depth profiles, the site is best suited for experienced divers or those with Advanced Open Water certification.

What a great place to learn diving! This school has a beautiful house reef and a super patient and understanding dive instructor. The school takes time to build up routines by repetition what helps to feel save. I had a lot of fun while learning and experiencing the world underwater.

Me and my sisters did the open water diving course. The course took 3 days with each 2 dives, we did the theoretical part online with an app. We managed to finish all the exercises in the first 2 days and were able to use the 3rd day to mostly just enjoy the sea turtles and coral reefs. The teachers were all really nice. The diving school is located in a bay south of Marsa Alam, a very quiet spot, with a few options for accommodation. The diving conditions are incredibly good, which makes diving very rewarding from the very beginning. It's also nice to have the bay more or less to yourself and not be surrounded my lots of other boats and divers.

I got my open water in the 90s. I have not dove since 2004. I clearly needed a refresher. I'm so glad I did! Doing the advanced open water with Deep South Divers was a very safe and pleasant experience. Great group of people and the instructor was clearly a master. If you plan to dive in this part of the Red Sea, you can't go wrong with Deep South Divers.
